Becoming a Structural Engineer
If you have ever been to a construction site, you probably have an idea of what a structural engineer does. These engineers examine, analyze, design, and construct structural elements and systems in buildings and structures to make sure that the building or construction is safe and secure for users or occupants or both. Architectural engineer jobs are required in all parts of the country and across all types of industries. If you are interested in being an engineer, there are some things you will need to know before making your decision.
Most often, you will become a structural engineer as an entry-level position, and it is typically the only job you will ever get as a structural engineer. If you want to advance into the more advanced roles, you may have to take some coursework or get an apprenticeship. You must be licensed by the ASCE (American Society for Civil Engineering) or the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) to do this type of work, so it would help to have a certification or degree if you ever decided to do this.
In general, a structural engineer must have a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited school or university. Students who want to specialize in one area will have to take a specific number of graduate courses and pass a written exam to become eligible. The review usually is elementary and can be made online. It takes less than one hundred hours of training to become a certified structural engineer. Still, you will need to be knowledgeable in the materials you will be using and what they are made of.
An excellent way to learn how to become an engineer is to get a Masters in Construction Engineering. In addition to having a Master's degree, you should also have at least three years of experience working in the construction field. This experience will help you develop excellent interpersonal skills and communication with contractors and others. In many cases, you will need to get additional licenses to become a structural engineer depending on where you live and your employer.
While you will have to take classes in construction engineering, you can choose which area of engineering you wish to specialize in. If you are interested in structural engineering, you can become a civil engineer or a building engineer. Each type of engineering is responsible for different aspects of the building, like foundations, beams, floors, walls, floor joists, and roofing.
You may also have to supervise the workers daily, such as laying drywall, installing insulation or sheetrock, or doing flooring or other construction projects. You will also be the person in charge of testing the foundation for stability and resistance to changes in load. In addition to being on-site, you will be involved in the entire project, from estimating costs to inspecting structural integrity. You will be responsible for any repairs that have to be made to the foundation or other elements of the building or structure.
